Hair Bonding 101: Understanding Kérastase Première

May 03, 2026

If your hair is breaking, brittle, or chemically damaged, you've probably heard of bond repair — and probably of Olaplex. But Olaplex isn't the only game in town. Kérastase Première is the brand's answer to bond-rebuilding, and it's worth understanding.

What Are Hair Bonds?

Hair is made of keratin protein, held together by three types of internal bonds:

  1. Disulfide bonds — the strongest, broken by chemical processes (color, perm, relaxer)
  2. Hydrogen bonds — broken by water and reformed when hair dries (this is how styling works)
  3. Salt bonds — broken by pH changes

Bond repair products specifically rebuild broken disulfide bonds.

How Première Works

Kérastase Première uses citric acid + glycine to remove calcium build-up and rebuild broken disulfide bonds. Calcium accumulates in hair from hard water and is one of the leading causes of brittleness — Olaplex doesn't address this.

The Première Ritual

The full Première system has 4 products:

  1. Bain Décalcifiant — removes calcium build-up
  2. Fondant Fluidité — repairing conditioner
  3. Masque Filler — weekly bond mask
  4. Sérum Filler — heat protectant + repair leave-in

Use the wash + condition daily, mask weekly, and serum before any heat styling.

Première vs Olaplex: Honest Comparison

Olaplex No.3 (the at-home treatment) and Première address damage from different angles. Olaplex focuses purely on disulfide bond rebuilding. Première also tackles calcium build-up.

For most damaged hair, Première is more comprehensive — but Olaplex is still excellent for severe chemical damage.

Visible Results

In Kérastase's clinical testing, Première reduces breakage by up to 97% after one use. We've seen comparable results on real clients in our salon.
