Why Salon-Exclusive Brands Outperform Drugstore Hair Care
The most common question in our salon: "Why does a Kérastase shampoo cost $46 when I can get a drugstore shampoo for $8?"
It's a fair question. And the answer matters whether you buy salon brands or not.
1. Concentration of Active Ingredients
Drugstore shampoos are typically 80-85% water with sulfates as the active cleansing agent. Salon-exclusive brands like Kérastase and Oribe use proprietary actives at 5-15× the concentration — Hyaluronic Acid, Edelweiss stem cells, Pro-Keratin, etc.
You use less product per wash because you're getting more active ingredient per pump.
2. Surfactant Quality
The cleansing agents in drugstore shampoo (sodium lauryl sulfate / SLS) are aggressive. They strip your hair of natural oils, which is why you need to wash more often.
Salon brands use gentler surfactants like sodium cocoyl isethionate or amino acid–based cleansers. The result: hair stays cleaner longer between washes, and color lasts longer.
3. R&D and Clinical Testing
Kérastase is part of L'Oréal's $1B+ R&D pipeline. Each formula goes through dozens of clinical trials before launch. Drugstore brands rely on cheaper, generic formulations.
4. Salon Authorization Means Quality Control
Brands like Kérastase, Oribe, R+Co, and Davines sell only through licensed salons and authorized retailers (like Cérène Cosmetics). This means:
- No counterfeit risk
- Product is fresh — typically less than 6 months from manufacture when you buy it
- You get the exact same formulation as a stylist would use in salon
5. The Hidden Cost of Drugstore Hair Care
Cheap shampoo doesn't actually save you money if it:
- Fades your $200 salon color in 4 weeks instead of 12
- Damages your hair, requiring more salon treatments
- Forces you to wash daily because it strips oil so aggressively
Where to Start
If you've been using drugstore brands and want to switch, don't try to replace everything at once. Start with one professional shampoo + conditioner system that matches your concern. Use our Shop by Concern guide to find your starter ritual.
